The Luhtanen Howes Charitable Foundation seeks to promote kindness in all levels of our society. We believe that kindness – and a lack of kindness – has a profound impact on the development of children and hope to encourage kind behavior in our families and in our communities.

We know that child abuse is too prevalent in our community. From the city of Detroit to its suburbs to the rest of Michigan and the United States, our children are being victimized. Over 30,000 cases of child abuse were confirmed in Michigan in 2009, over 5,000 of which occurred in Wayne County (source: Michigan CASA). We believe every child has the right to a safe environment and the opportunity to grow up to be a loving, caring adult.

So many times we see the problem in other countries or other communities and feel that it is not something that happens in our neighborhoods. But child abuse is not restricted to specific income level or social position; it can and does happen in our towns and communities. Our mission is to raise awareness of this issue locally and to support victims in their recovery.
